Background: The use of communication technologies empowers seniors to deal with limitations and difficulties of modern life.
Objective: this study was aimed to determine the socio-demographic factors in predicting of use of common communication technologies (computers, internet, ATM machines, and mobile phones) by the elderly residing in Qazvin, Iran in 2017.
Material and Methods: In this descriptive analytical study, 165 elderly adults were selected by cluster sampling method from Qazvin, Iran and enter in the study. Demographic checklist and researcher made questionnaire for the use of common communication technologies were used for collecting the data. Descriptive tests and multivariate regression model were run for data analysis.
Results: The mean age of the participants of the present study was 68.38 ± 7.89 years old. ،The majority of elderly people did not use computer (77%, n= 77) and internet (67.9%, n = 112) services. The results of multivariate regression showed that age (B = -0.209, p = 0.002), gender (B = -0.142, p = 0.029), educational level (B = 0.501, p = 0.000), and financial status (B = 0.142, p = 0.023) were the predictive factors of using of common communication technologies by elderly adults.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, a small percentage of the elderly adults used the computers and internet services. So, providing education programs for the elderly is the most essential step in order to become familiar with and use the new communication technologies.
